Time To Learn

A young but earnest Zen student approached his teacher, and asked the Zen Master:
"If I work very hard and diligent how long will it take for me to find Zen."
The Master thought about this, then replied, "Ten years."
The student then said, "But what if I work very, very hard and really apply myself to learn fast -- How long then ?"
Replied the Master, "Well, twenty years."
"But, if I really, really work at it. How long then ?" asked the student.
"Thirty years," replied the Master.
"But, I do not understand," said the disappointed student.
"At each time that I say I will work harder, you say it will take me longer.
Why do you say that ?"
Replied the Master," When you have one eye on the goal, you only have one eye on the path."

"Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, "who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous."
Actually, who are you NOT to be. Your playing small doesn't serve the world.
There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that others won't feel insecure around you.
We are born to manifest the glory that is within us. It is in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others."

He who controls others may be powerful but he who has mastered himself is mightier still.

Instant Lesson
A huge, rough samurai once went to see a little monk, hoping to acquire the secrets of the universe.
"Monk," he said, in a voice accustomed to instant obedience. "teach me about heaven and hell."
The little monk looked up at the mighty warrior in silence.
Then, after a moment, he said to the samurai with utter disdain,
"Teach YOU about heaven and hell? I couldn't teach you about anything.
You're dirty. You smell. Your blade is rusty.
You're a disgrace, an embarrassment to the samurai class.
Get out of my sight at once. I can't stand you!"
The samurai was furious. He began to shake all over from the anger that raced through him.
A red flush spread over his face; he was speechless with rage.
Quickly, menacingly, he pulled out his sword and raised it above his head,
preparing to slay the monk.
"That's hell." said the little monk quietly.
The samurai was overwhelmed.
Stunned.
The compassion and surrender of this little man who had offered his life to give this teaching about hell!
He slowly lowered his sword, filled with gratitude,
and for reasons he could not explain his heart became suddenly peaceful.
"And that's heaven," said the monk softly.

The Song Of Life
The song of life vibrates throughout the universe,
each instrument of the vast orchestra playing its unique, necessary part.
Each species lends its voice to the ensemble.
Every range, from soprano to bass,
fills out the infinite choir.
When one section of the orchestra loses its timing,
or plays when it should be silent, or remains silent when i should play,
the whole symphony falls into discord.
When humanity tries to sing without listening to the others,
the whole world falls into disharmony.
But we can learn to harmonize with all the other life forms,
the earth, and the universe.
Instead of throwing the whole song off key,
we can learn to blend in perfect harmony.

"People are like stained-glass windows.

"A soulmate is someone who has locks that fit our keys, and keys to fit our locks.
When we feel safe enough to open the locks,
our truest selves step out and we can be completely and honestly who we are;
we can be loved for who we are and not for who we're pretending to be.
Each unveils the best part of the other.
No matter what else goes wrong around us,
with that one person we're safe in our own paradise.
Our soulmate is someone who shares our deepest longings, our sense of direction.
When we're two balloons, and together our direction is up,
chances are we've found the right person.
Our soulmate is the one who makes life come to life."
