"If I had two loaves of bread, I would sell
one and buy hyacinths for they would feed my soul." - The Koran
The hardest hunger to bear is that of our souls. When our spirit is
nourished our hearts and bodies sing; joy is no stranger.
Our spiritual development asks that we say yes to the people, places, and
things in our lives that nurture us. It asks, too, that we say no to
things that don't.
Lives cluttered with meetings, telephone calls, appointments, and endless
lists of things to do leave little room inside for the soul's flowers to
grow. To make that room we must change our priorities. They most likely
have changed since we first established our schedules. Where and how can
we cut back?
That first meeting we bow out of might be a rough one. We may feel
guilt. We may not be used to putting ourselves first. People may be
disappointed or angry with us.
It is a choice. One that at first may not feel good. We can trust,
however, that the very sense that tells us what to cut out of our lives
can in time tell us what to fill them with.
